Martin Obermuller

Treasurer

Martin hails from Hove in East Sussex where at 14 years of age he began his experience in brass banding, moving to principal cornet with Hangleton Band and simultaneously holding the bumper up seat with Patcham Parish Church Band. His first experience of conducting came with Hangleton Youth Band and this positive experience led to him to leave employment with East Sussex County Council and move north to the home of banding to study for the innovative Graduate Diploma in Band Musicianship at Salford.

Martin became a member of Wingates Band, and at the same time led Swinton Concert Brass as Musical Director. Martin has conducted many bands in the North West including Goodshaw, Eccles Borough, Rivington and Adlington, Golborne, Flixton, Vernon Building Society Poynton, and Moston and Beswick. He has also enjoyed the position of bandmaster and playing member of the Besses o’ th’ Barn, BT and Stalybridge bands and has been engaged to adjudicate at local slow melody competitions.

As head of music in a Salford secondary school, Martin gave students the opportunity to develop a love for music and to learn to play brass instruments, also encouraging them to become active members of local bands. He enjoyed many courses as a housemaster for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and found time to study conducting for his Masters degree in Music (Performance) at Salford University.

His engagement as Deputy Headteacher at another Salford school and study for further professional qualifications has sadly put regular banding on the back burner for a while, but Martin has been delighted to accept invitations to conduct bands at concerts and contests when possible during this time.
